Get More Traffic with Current Trends

The true power of organic search was revealed to me today. I was on Facebook and noticed that a large number of my female friends were posting colors rather ambiguously as their status update. My first instinct was to turn to Google. There didn’t seem to be very many high ranking sites reporting on this. I found some information on another blog and decided to post about it on my personal blog. I also posted the link on my Twitter account.

What ensued was beyond my wildest. This blog at the time of writing is not exactly high traffic. Most traffic is driven through my personal Twitter and Facebook accounts, but not today. Within about two hours Google had indexed my post, and put me on page 1 for a handful of common related search terms. My traffic within that 2 hours was about 400% greater than a normal month for this site. Crazy.

The main factors for this were probably linking to another high level blog on the bra subject and getting a trackback, as well as being one of the first on the scene. If you’re trying to drive traffic to your own site consider blogging about things that are just unfolding. While Google was the main source for traffic to this article, Twitter also send a larger number of visitors than normal as did Facebook. To my surprise though the Facebook visitors also arrived in a somewhat viral manner as I had not posted a link to the article on my Facebook account like I did on my Twitter account. People were sharing my link via Facebook.

Several days later and my Alexa page rank had also improved considerably. For future posts on your own blog consider looking at trends that may fit within your niche. Has anyone else out there had similar experiences with trending and search engine visitors? Please feel free to add to the discussion.
